Update from President Sorrell

4.16.2020

Quinnites-

I hope that each of you is well and settling into your new routine.  The campus is a very different and lonely place without seeing your faces and hearing your voices.  The faculty, staff, and I all miss you.  While WE appreciate the phone calls, zoom sessions, and emails, the truth is nothing replaces being in each other’s presence.  WE look forward to the moment when it is safe for us to all be physically together again.

Let me apologize at the outset of this message for its length.  In this email, I will be covering a number of issues that require a detailed explanation.  To help with the understanding of all of this, I will be emailing you a video explanation as well.  I anticipate sending that to you tomorrow. I hope that between these two methods, this will all answer all of your questions.  If not, the staff and I are happy to answer whatever is unclear.

Remainder of the School Year and Reimbursements

At this point in time, given all of the feedback that we have received from national, state, and local officials and the fact that the Shelter in Place Order that has been issued will be in place until April 30th (at the earliest), we will not be re-opening the campus prior to the end of the school year.  Therefore, we will continue with our distance learning program for the remainder of the semester.  While I am sure there are many questions that this decision causes, the one that seems to be most prevalent on the minds of you and your fellow Quinnites is the status of your reimbursements for room and board fees.  The College will be reimbursing students for unused room and board charges.  Graduating seniors will receive their reimbursements in cash payments that will be sent to them no later than the end of the College’s fiscal year (June 30th).  All other students will receive a credit that can be applied to their next academic semester (the next academic semester for the College will be our new, expanded summer school program that will begin in just over one month, May 18th – more on this new offering below).  The exact amount of each student’s reimbursement was determined by calculating the pro rated amount of unused room and board fees minus (1) any balance said student owed to the institution and (2) institutional aid that was awarded to the student. The following are examples of institutional aid: (1) Presidential Scholarships; (2) Athletic Scholarships; (3) Residential Assistant Scholarships; (4) Richard Allen Servant Leaders Scholarships; (5) Legacy Scholarships; (6) Honors Scholarships; (7) Retention Scholarships; and (8) Strada Education Network Housing Scholarships (PQC – Plano).

Here is a detailed explanation of how total reimbursements were calculated:

           Room charge ($1500) + Board charge ($1750) = $3250

Students completed 60% of the semester, leaving 40% of the fees subject to reimbursement (.40 x $3250 = $1300)

Total amount eligible for reimbursement = $1300 *if applicable, this amount was reduced by one or more of the following:

  • Unpaid student balance owed to the College

  • Less any institutional aid provided by the College to the student

*Please contact the Business Office (214-379-5560) with any questions regarding the amount of your reimbursement payment or credit.

PQC - Summer 2020

In a departure from our traditional academic calendar and in response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Quinnite Nation is starting our school year three months early.  PQC - Summer starts May 18th and will conclude August 7th.  Here are the details:

  • You will have the ability to take 12 hours (four classes) over the course of the summer in either the Core or in your major

  • By attending school this summer, you will have access to financial aid (Pell Grants, loans, and any other available aid) that can assist you with managing your school and living expenses over the summer

  • All classes will continue to be held online (with modifications made from student/faculty feedback from spring 2020 semester)

  • A return to letter grades to support improvements in your GPA

  • Continued enrollment to preserve your student loan grace period

  •   Registration will start soon.  Please watch for an invite from your academic advisor

CARES Act Funds

Per the CARES Act,  the College received approximately $581,000 to be distributed to students with financial need.  The legislation grants the College broad authority in how the money is awarded.  We have decided on the following methodology:

There will be two phases of grants to the students. In phase one, any student who is in good standing with the College will receive a grant of $750 as soon as the funds are available.  Good standing is defined as students with no outstanding balance; in compliance with the requirements of the work program; and have no current or pending disciplinary issues.  Additionally, only currently enrolled students are eligible for this funding.

Any student who is not considered in good standing will be required to submit an application to our institutional committee to be considered for CARES Act funding.  The following Quinnites are members of the committee:

  • Ayanna Watkins (SGA)

  • Alexya Soto (Student-Athletes)

  • Prof. Rosario (Faculty)

  • Caritza Mariani (Retention)

  • Dean McGriff (Student Affairs)

  • Dr. Kizuwanda Grant (Administration)

  • Bruce Brinson (Administration)

Phase two of the funding will be determined by this same committee. Those funds will be awarded during either the fall or spring semesters.

In order to access your funds, please refer to the e-mail sent to you by your advisors.

Again, I apologize for the length of this email.  However, I hope that the information that it contains more than makes up for its length.  Remember, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks and please stay safe,

Prez
